AI & Engineering

Similar to CAD, HYSYS, spreadsheets, or Procore; AI can help project teams work more efficiently. The software does not change who is responsible for design, permits, reports, data quality, or client information. Footprint reviews consequential outputs against source records, site conditions, applicable requirements, and independent checks. We use a tool only within the scope and controls agreed for the project. Working under the most current guidance for Professional responsibility and ethical practice; we aim to integrate new tools into project delivery while adhering to updated standards:

Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct are binding for engineering practice within their scope. They address public protection, competence, truthful reporting, conflicts, and responsibility for work. Qualified professionals remain responsible for their own disciplines and decisions.

Georgia sealing rules address engineering documents issued under seal, including digital work. Reviewing an AI-generated or third-party concept does not automatically make Footprint its engineer of record or authorize a seal.

NCEES Policy Statement 6.10 on responsible AI use and NSPE's AI ethics case are professional guidance, rather than Georgia law. They reinforce human oversight, competence, critical review of output, accountability, source attribution, and protection of client information. An AI answer is not independently verified evidence.

AI risk, confidentiality, and controls

For each engagement, we can define the decision and review boundary; identify source data and assumptions; check calculations and material claims; document uncertainties and findings; involve qualified partners where needed; and distinguish screening work from a design, permit conclusion, or signed submittal. The responsible owner, professional, or regulatory signer remains identified.

Guidance from industry standards provides frameworks for validation, privacy, oversight, monitoring, data access, retention, and other reviews.  Project data and records can be discussed for use in select tools, controls, and protocols.

Industry and regulatory references inform our approach. Project-specific requirements are developed in partnership with client. We revisit guidance and project methods as they change.
